Abstract

Bio-based resins are renewable, ecologically sound substitutes for petroleum-based plastic products, replacing nearly 100% of the petroleum-based additives used in traditional plastics. BioPlastics resins can be starch-based, made from corn, wheat, tapioca and potato starches that primarily come from the Midwest (versus oil from the Middle East). Made from renewable resources, BioPlastic resin costs remain stable and competitive with traditional resins. Since these resins are starch-based, rather than petroleum-based, the cost is less subject to fluctuation of fossil fuel prices. In addition, the variety of starch options mitigates the effect of price fluctuations in any one commodity. The manufacturing process for bio-based resins takes place at a lower heat than required with traditional plastics, further reducing the manufacturing costs for converters.

BioPlastic hybrid products are bio-based, replacing 50% or more of the petroleum content in traditional plastic products with materials from renewable sources such as starches from corn, tapioca, wheat and potatoes. Hybrid products are cost-competitive with traditional petroleum-based plastic resin. With significantly more of the resin content derived from starches, the pricing of hybrid products are not as influenced by the volatile prices of oil.

This discussion will include processing, applications, and sample uses of BioPlastics

About Cereplast

Cereplast, Inc. (OTCBB:CERP) designs and manufactures proprietary bio-based, sustainable plastics which are used as substitutes for petroleum-based plastics in all major converting processes – such as injection molding, thermoforming, blow molding and extrusions – at a pricing structure that is competitive with petroleum-based plastics. On the cutting-edge of bio-based plastic material development, Cereplast now offers resins to meet a variety of customer demands. Cereplast Compostables® resins are ideally suited for single use applications where high bio-based content and compostability are advantageous, especially in the food service industry. Cereplast Hybrid Resins® products combine high bio-based content with the durability and endurance of traditional plastic, making them ideal for applications in industries such as automotive, consumer electronics and packaging.
