Announcements and Discussion

·         Board member introductions and welcome to Rey Parel as a new SPE GGS director

·         San Jose State’s SPE Student Chapter is hosting a fundraiser the evening of 11/5/2011.  A portion of the profits will go to the student chapter.

·         Discussed adding more members to the board of directors.  General agreement that this was a good idea, and folks will try to recruit from their colleagues.

·         Discussed event ideas and assigned action items.

Current Schedule for Upcoming Meetings
 

Oct 20th – Seminar at Exponent by Dr. Mikhail Kislitsyn on Lithium Ion batteries and plastics

November – Networking Lunch during the second week of November.

December – The ‘Past Presidents’ dinner was well-received in 2010.  Could do a similar event, or a general holiday social, but it should be held at a less expensive venue.  Need to send “Save the Date” message out about this asap.

January – open

March – Half day technical event at Chico or SJSU (needs planning)

Potential Topics for 2012 Seminars

·         Microfluidics and Surface Treatment – Rey Parel suggested a potential collaboration with Mikki/Plasmatreat

·         Synthetic Cork Technology- Raj Varma with NeoCork (they have expressed interest for an early 2012 slot)

·         Presenters from Tyco? – Jennifer and Brian to identify potential speakers/topic

·         In-Mold Labeling Methods for Packaging Industry – Mikki/Plasmatreat

·         Fundamentals of Plasma Treatment - Mikki/Plasmatreat

·         Universal Test Machine demonstration or discussion of its utility for evaluating polymeric materials (mechanical testing and imaging combinations)– might be too commercial

Potential Sites for 2012 Plant Tours

·         Consider having one event at a university (SJSU or Chico) – Jennifer to discuss and coordinate w/ Joe and Richard

·         Tesla Tour at Nummi Plant – Eric will investigate and arrange

·         Axygen Tour – Eric will look into this

·         Pepsi bottling plant tour in Union City – Eric has a friend at Pepsi that may be able to make this happen.  Eric will make contact.

Action Items

·         All board members are to encourage/recruit people in their networks to join the board (they will need to join SPE, if not already a member)- we could use an injection of creativity!

·         Eric will contact Pepsi, Axygen, and Tesla to see if we can arrange one or more tours in 2012.

·         Eric will find a restaurant and make arrangements for a networking luncheon the 2nd week of November.

·         Mikki will (if she accepts being volunteered) find a venue, set a date and make sure a “Save the Date” message gets sent out for our December dinner.

·         Jen and Brian will contact Tyco regarding a presentation.

·         Jennifer will contact Joe/Richard to discuss idea of holding a half day technical event at one of the universities (poster session, lab demos, etc.), possibly to coincide with Education Night.

We will hold another BOD meeting in early December to set the schedule for 2012.
